Acid Dyes vs. Natural Dyes: Choosing Color That Lasts

“Are your dyes natural?”

That’s a question I get pretty often, and I’m always glad when someone asks. It usually comes from a person who cares about where things come from and what goes into them, which is exactly the kind of person I want holding my yarn.

The honest answer is no. I dye with acid dyes. I want to explain why, because the reasoning is more interesting than a yes or a no, and because “acid dye” sounds a great deal scarier than it is.

First, that word “acid”

Let’s clear this up, because the name does the dye no favors.

Acid dyes are not caustic, and there is no acid left in your finished yarn. The name describes the environment the dye needs in order to work, not the dye itself. Setting an acid dye takes three things: the dye, heat, and a mild acid. In my studio that acid is citric acid, the same thing that makes a lemon sour. Plenty of dyers use plain white vinegar instead. That’s the whole list. Nothing in it would worry you if you found it in your kitchen, because most of it already is.

What actually happens in the pot

Here’s the part I find genuinely cool.

Wool is a protein fiber, and protein has sites all along it that will grab a dye molecule when the water is warm and slightly acidic. When that happens, the dye doesn’t sit on top of the wool. It bonds to it. It becomes part of the fiber.

You can watch it happen, too. At the start of a pot the water is deeply colored and the wool is pale. Over the next while the color moves out of the water and into the wool, and by the end the water has gone nearly clear. Dyers call that “exhausting” the bath, and it’s the visual proof that the dye went where it was supposed to go.

Two good things follow from that clear water. The first is colorfastness. The second is that very little dye goes down my drain at the end of the day, which is not what most people expect to hear about a synthetic dye.

Why colorfastness is the whole point

Think about what you’re actually going to make with a sweater’s worth of yarn. You’ll spend weeks on it, maybe months. Then you’ll wear it, and wash it, and wear it again, for years. If you’ve done it right, you’ll eventually hand it to somebody.

That is a lot to ask of a color.

Because the dye is bonded into the fiber, an acid-dyed skein holds up through all of it. It won’t bleed into the cream section of your colorwork yoke when you block it. It won’t turn the basin pink every single time you soak your shawl. It won’t go dull and chalky after one summer of being worn.

I’ll give you the same honest caveat I put in the care guide: with very saturated colors, especially deep reds and navies, your first wash may release a whisper of excess dye. That’s leftover dye that never bonded in the first place, finally rinsing away. It is not the bond letting go. Wash a new hand-dyed piece on its own the first time and you’ll likely never think about it again.

The other reason: you can get more of it

This one is less romantic, but in practice it matters just as much.

I dye by measured formula — grams of dye to grams of wool, written down, every time. So when you finish the second sleeve and realize you’re forty yards short, I can very likely dye you more of that colorway and have it come out looking like that colorway. Not identical, because anything hand-dyed has a personality of its own, but close enough to knit with.

Natural dyes can’t really make that promise. And I say that with affection, because I like natural dyes a great deal.

About natural dyes, honestly

I don’t want any of this to read as a takedown. Natural dyeing is a beautiful old craft, and some of it is genuinely excellent. Madder, indigo, weld, and cochineal have been coloring cloth for thousands of years and they hold up remarkably well. There are extraordinary natural dyers working today and I admire what they make.

But there are real trade-offs, and they’re the reason I landed where I did.

Consistency. A natural dye is agricultural. The same plant, harvested in a different year, grown in different soil, simmered in water with a different mineral content, gives you a different color. That’s part of the charm, and it’s also part of the problem. It makes a named colorway a much looser promise than I want to make.

Lightfastness. The historic heavy hitters are strong, but a lot of the natural colors people fall in love with are fugitive. The soft golds from goldenrod and marigold, the blush pinks from avocado pits, several of the purples — they’re gorgeous the day you finish and noticeably paler after a season near a sunny window.

Mordants. Most natural dyes need a mordant, a mineral that helps fix the color to the fiber. Alum is fairly benign. Others in the traditional palette are copper, tin, and chrome, and those are metals I would rather not be rinsing on a regular basis, before we even get to disposing of them responsibly.

Volume. Dyeing a meaningful amount of wool often takes several times its weight in plant material. That’s a lovely equation for a garden-scale dye pot. It’s a different equation when you’re dyeing to fill a shop.

Where that leaves us

I chose acid dyes for the same reason I chose non-superwash wool. In both cases it was the option that best served what I want the yarn to be.

Non-superwash gives you wool that behaves like wool — with bloom, with stitch definition, with no plastic coating between you and the fiber. Acid dyes give you color that stays where I put it for as long as that wool lasts.

The wool is grown by American ranchers, then cleaned and spun at a mill in North Carolina, and then it comes to me and I put color into it that should still be there in fifteen years. That’s the whole idea.
